Sasya

In the classroom: Last school year I had the pleasure of teaching Sasya for Grade 2 English. I was immediately taken by her passion to conquer the language, which was driven by her strong need to communicate her thoughts and emotions. It was her first year in Bina Cita Utama and questions such as “Ibu, how do I say (in Bahasa Indonesia) this is the best day of my life?” or “Ibu, what is (in Bahasa Indonesia) I’m really excited in English?” were a regular occurrence during our time together. By the end of that year, Sasa had progressed to such a level that she was able to confidently present a class project in front of the school entirely in English.

In and out of the classroom, Sasya consistently shows compassion and genuine care to her friends and those around her. One instance particularly stands out; we had been learning and practicing how to write letters and notes in class when the following week one of the students fell ill. Sasya fired off ten letters for her, one for each day that her friend was in the hospital. Her infectious energy continues to brighten the school and is a refreshing reminder of why I got into this field.

Family: Sasya or Deisya aulia Ragandhi, is the only child of Pak Sucipto Sukanto and his wife Naima. Pak Cipto is an active Subud member who was opened in 2002 and has worked in Rungan Sari since 2000. At the moment, he works as a freelance driver and helps his wife with her business. His wife Naima has a small salon in the village, hairdressing and wedding preparations. They do not receive a fixed income but little by little they have been able to start to improve their standard of living.

Both Pak Cipto and his wife are hard workers, which can be seen by the hours they work. The salon is open from 7 am – 7 pm and when there is a wedding in the village both the husband and wife work together on the preparations, with Pak Cipto in charge of decorations and documentation and Ibu Naima the hair and make up for the bride and family members. On some occasions they work from 5 am until 10 pm on these events.

The thing that is most touching about them when you know them, is their willingness to give without any expectation of reward and their willingness to help wherever they can. Pak Cipto once said in high Javanese “In life what will be remembered by others after we pass away will be our human kindness.” This is something that represents an understanding of Susila, Budi and Dharma. Their goodness and ready smiles when helping others is something that makes those around them happy to work alongside them. BCU School chose to provide a scholarship for their daughter Sasya with the hope that Sasya willbe able to grow and develop into a useful human being and reward her parents who have always worked hard for her and others.
