Maicol

Maicol is the first child of Maicol Salazar, 25, and Jaquelin Zarate, 23. In 2016, with support from the Solidarity Bridge/ Puente de Solidaridad Heart Program, Maicol underwent surgery to close a persistent arteriosus ductus as a first step to manage a set of congenital heart defects. The parents have closely monitored his health since then, taking him for checkups every three months. The results of his last evaluation indicated that a follow-up surgery was necessary to complete the repairs to his growing heart.

Maicol lives with his parents and maternal grandmother in a home that consists of one room plus a basic kitchen and bathroom. Mr. Salazar works as a taxi driver, earning an average of US $18 per day. Jaquelin sells flowers a few times a week with her mother, adding another US $40 per week to the household income. By consolidating their funds and living frugally, Maicol's family did all they could to save for the new surgery.

As Jaquelin relayed to the Puente de Solidaridad social worker:

"When my son was born, they performed his first surgery. We have always been responsible for his checkups. At his last follow-up, they told us that another operation would be necessary before he gets bigger. Now, I find myself pregnant again and I would like my boy to have the operation before I give birth, so that I can devote myself to providing the care that Maicol needs after the surgery. You supported us through the first surgery, when my son was born. Now again, he needs surgery, and we would like to make another request for your support. We don't have the financial resources necessary for what my son needs. We would appreciate your help. May God bless you."

Maicol's surgery was performed on April 22, 2019, at the Incor hospital in Santa Cruz. He responded well, and was sent home after three days of recovery in the hospital. The family continues to monitor him closely, and is eternally grateful for the support that Solidarity Bridge provides.
