Martina

Martina is the oldest daughter of Carlos and Elena. They also have a 2-year-old daughter. The family lives with the paternal grandparents and two of Carlos's siblings. They all support each other within their economic means. Elena is a homemaker and Carlos is a farmer. His minimal income is used to support the family and to contribute towards the basic needs of his parents.

Martina is stable; however, she tires easily from any physical activity. She was diagnosed with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Corrective surgery was due to be carried out earlier this year. Due to the pandemic, it was delayed. The specialists have advised the parents, that the operation is urgent. Her parents were referred to Solidarity Bridge for economic support. They are awaiting Martina's procedure.

Martina's mother shared: “When my daughter was born, everything was normal. After she became a year old, she became sick, and we had to hospitalize her. At this time, we were told that she had a heart murmur. Last year we were referred for treatment. However, they were not able to perform the surgery as all surgeries were suspended to the pandemic. The doctors informed us that the operation was urgent. We are very concerned and would like her to get the surgery so that she can be in good health. We are very grateful for the help that you can provide us.”

With support from Puente de Solidaridad and the Goff Gift Fund, Martina was able to undergo surgery at the Incor Clinic in Santa Cruz. Partner surgeons worked to close the opening in Martina’s heart, and she was able to leave the hospital the following day. The six-year old’s renewed heart health will allow her to enjoy all the wonder, play, and spontaneity of childhood and that is an incredible gift.
