Kati and Beymar were married five years before welcoming their first child, a son. Beymar works as a “tramitador” – a specialist in preparing and filing bureaucratic paperwork for various purposes - but when he was told his son had a perimembranous ventrical septal defect (VSD), he was at a loss for where to turn and what to do. The family was told the baby needed surgery that is only available at a private clinic at a cost of over $12,000 dollars if there are no complications, not counting medications and other care and treatment. After paying the mortgage for their simple home plus food and utilities, Kati and Beymar have nothing left over to pay such a bill. They turned to Puente de Solidaridad for support.
Social worker Carmen Salses guided the family through the process of scheduling and preparing for the surgery. Kati expressed her gratitude: “We know the best for him is to have the surgery, and we are very grateful for all your support. It would be difficult for us to confront it alone.”
