Make a Difference or Dye Tieing

Many people think tie dye is just a style, but when it's used in the right way, it can change the world. That's what we believe and we're not about to think differently. Let me explain....

In July of 2010, 25 of us Canadians set out for Rwanda to work in, and stay at an elementary school. I think it's safe to say we all came back changed. For me, going with a good friend when both of us were only 16 gave it huge impact for us; we didn't want it to become just another cool memory from our teenage years. There were awesome memories of the simple love and kindness the people expressed to us, and harder ones like the Rwandan genocide stories we heard. On the trip we went to a genocide memorial. It was hard to go to, but definitely important to see and understand the history of the country. The last room in the memorial was a room dedicated to the children's lives that were cut short by the genocide. One of the stories in the room was about a little girl named Filette. Her best friend was her dad, her favourite foods were rice and chips, and she had been beaten against a wall until death. She was 2. This is injustice at its finest, and the kids we came to know in Rwanda deserved so much better.

Coming back we knew we had to make a difference but didn't know how. We could never undo what happened to Filette and the many other children like her but we knew we had the power to provide hope for the next generation of Rwandans. One day we came up with the idea of making tie dyes for the massively in debt feeding program at the school we were working in. We called it Make a Difference or Dye Tieing and the rest was history. We've been working since August selling tie dye t-shirts and tank tops. These kids deserve every chance we give our kids here in North America, but instead they're faced with the struggles of just hoping for education and wondering if food will come some days. Food is not a privilege but a right. The feeding program at their school provides over 600 kids daily with a big lunch, some of which will only receive this one a meal per day. By buying MADODT products, people are helping these students to not only survive, but to thrive as all profits go to the Kigali Christian School feeding program.

For awhile we have only been using Dharma Trading Co dyes which give us the best result for our tie dyes and gives our customers great satisfaction. Dharma Trading Co has even been generous enough to even donate dyes to us enabling us to cut the dye cost so more money can be given to the school.

This isn't about just being western "do-gooders" so we can pat ourselves on the back and feel good about what we do with our lives. It's not about taking pity on people who have less than us. It's about the genuine care and love we have for our Rwandan brothers and sisters, and after becoming invested in their lives and stories, it's not hard to do. After all, we're just here to make a difference...or die trying.
