Isla

When 22-year-old Aurelia went into the delivery room in 2019, she didn’t know she was pregnant with twins. Aurelia and her husband Osvaldo were surprised to suddenly be parents to two beautiful baby girls.

When the twins were three years old, the smaller one, Isla, became very sick. They went to the Children’s Hospital in Santa Cruz for help, where a cardiologist informed them, Isla had a serious heart condition and pneumonia. Isla suffered from a heart disorder called Tetralogy of Fallot. The little girl was turning purple and urgently needed surgery.

Osvaldo and Aurelia were concerned for their daughter’s health and concerned with how they would cover the cost of this complex surgery. Osvaldo earned a living as a dock worker in the market to support his wife, two daughters, and his elderly mother. The couple were referred to the Incor Foundation and Puente de Solidaridad in Santa Cruz for assistance.

Isla was admitted for surgery in August with Drs. Barrientos and Jaldín at the Incor Clinic. It was a complicated surgery but seemed to go well. Sadly, Isla’s condition destabilized after surgery. She suffered arrythmia and cardiac arrest and could not be resuscitated. Isla passed away just days after surgery. Our thoughts go out to Isla’s parents and twin sister who are surely suffering from this great loss.
