Gianna

At nine-years-old, Gianna was diagnosed with a large ostium secundum atrial septal defect (ASD). This is a hole in the center of the wall between the upper chambers of the heart. Normally, the right side of the heart pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs, while the left side pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body. An ASD allows blood from both sides to mix, causing the heart to work less efficiently.

Gianna’s mother, Rosa, said "A few months ago, my daughter began to feel pain in her chest. They did several studies and detected the heart problem. I stopped working in order to take care of her. When they told me that she needed surgery, I became very worried and started looking for support. I am very grateful for the help you provide."

Gianna’s parents are separated, but her father sends some money from Sao Paolo to assist with her basic needs. Gianna’s grandmother also helps the family. Gianna continued to attend school as her mother looked for help to cover the cost of her heart surgery. Fortunately, with help from the Incor Hospital, Puente de Solidaridad, and Dharma Social Projects, Gianna was scheduled for surgery. Bolivian pediatric heart surgeon, Dr. Hornez, successfully inserted a cardiac closure device to correct Gianna’s ASD. She was released from the hospital the following day to the great relief of her mother and extended family.
